This is a self-portrait by Kang Se-hwang (姜世晃, 1713–1791), a notable literati painter of the eighteenth century, at the age of seventy. Such self-portraits were rare during the Joseon Dynasty, with this and a self-portrait of Yun Du-seo making up the only two surviving examples from the period. Kang depicts himself sitting on the floor clad in an everyday outfit and an osamo (black silk winged hat). His jade-hued dopo (everyday coat) contrasts strikingly with the red sejodae (colored waist cord). His fine wrinkles are delineated in detail using multiple drawing lines rather than soft gradations of colors. Somewhat intense shading is added to the sides of his face. These elements in the face reflect the spreading influence of Western-style painting at the time. This self-portrait is in many ways typical of portraits of figures in everyday robes. However, the combination of an everyday robe with an osamo, a hat normally accompanying an official robe, is unusual. This clothing combination is explained in the self-eulogy written in the upper-left and upper-right sections of the painting. In it, Kang described himself as an official who did his best to carry out his duties as a scholar-official at the Joseon court, but revealed that in his own mind he was a recluse living in the mountains. Based on this description, the osamo on his head and the dopo over his body can be interpreted as symbols of his accomplishments as an official but his pursuit of a literati lifestyle. At the end of his self-eulogy, Kang mentioned his pride in his knowledge and talent and stressed that this painting and self-eulogy are his own creations. This self-portrait of Kang at seventy strikes a harmony between the creative iconography and the eulogy. It is a masterpiece that not only achieves the original objective of portraits of handing down the sitter’s image to future generations, but also expresses the self-awareness and introspection of the aged painter.
