유적설명(영어) |
Popularly known as Manwoldae, this is the site of the Royal Palace of the Goryeo Dynasty (918–1392), located at the southern foot of Mt. Songak in Kaesong. The palace served as the main place of the throne during the Goryeo Dynasty from its construction in 919 to its destruction in 1361 by Hongtou’s invasion. Since the palace was situated on a mountainous terrain, buildings were built on terraces. The central axis of each structure varied depending on the given topographical features unlike other palaces where buildings are aligned on a north-to-south axis. The central group of buildings such as the Hoegyong Hall (first main hall), the Janghwa Hall and the Wondok Hall was placed in the middle area with the Kondok Hall (second main hall) located to its west, a crown prince palace to its east and a palace garden to its north. The North-South joint excavations were conducted from 2007. The site of the Royal Palace of Goryeo was inscribed on the World Heritage List at the 37th session of the World Heritage Committee in 2013.
